Is DC area economical sustainable?

It is correct that the economy of the Washington Metropolitan Area is largely fueled by federal spending. If spending is cut back, that would have a negative effect upon the economy. Fewer federal employees in the area means more unemployment, fewer people making purchases at the stores, and fewer people purchasing houses. If the government reduces its contribution to the Metro transit system, in another instance, the fares would likely rise steeply, taking money from the riders that they otherwise could use in other ways.
